Rehabilitation of Windows at Historic Wheatley Hall at Georgia Southwestern State University
AMERICUS, GA - Studio 8 provided design and construction administration for restoration of the historic windows of the Assembly Hall in the Wheatley Building on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. The University had five primary concerns for the renovation including the following: maintaining the historical character of the windows; the cost of repair/replacement/restoration; energy efficiency; schedule/time frame; and long term maintenance. Studio 8 provided an assessment of the windows and examined the feasibility of replacement or restoration weighing pros and cons with associated costs for each option. It was determined that in order to meet the five objectives of the University, restoration of the original windows would be the best option. The cost to restore the windows was less than replacement cost and the process preserves the original windows. Additional elements were integrated to increase energy efficiency as well. A specialty contractor in Tampa, Florida provided the detailed restoration work.
